How to Connect WhatsApp to OpenClaw Cloud
Chat with your AI assistant directly from WhatsApp. This guide covers both personal WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business API setups.
Prerequisites
- Active OpenClaw Cloud subscription
- WhatsApp installed on your phone
- For Business API: Meta Business account
Option 1: WhatsApp Web Bridge (Easiest)
The simplest way to connect WhatsApp to OpenClaw is using the built-in WhatsApp Web bridge. This works with personal WhatsApp accounts.
Step 1: Enable WhatsApp in Dashboard
- Log into your OpenClaw Cloud dashboard
- Navigate to Channels → WhatsApp
- Click Enable WhatsApp Bridge
Step 2: Scan QR Code
- A QR code will appear on screen
- Open WhatsApp on your phone
- Go to Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device
- Scan the QR code
Step 3: Start Chatting
That's it! Your OpenClaw will now respond to WhatsApp messages. The AI will appear as if it's you responding (since it uses your WhatsApp account).
Create a WhatsApp group with just yourself, then add the group to your OpenClaw allowlist. This way you can chat with your AI without it responding to other messages.
Option 2: WhatsApp Business API (Advanced)
For a dedicated business number, you'll need to set up the official WhatsApp Business API through Meta.
Requirements
- Meta Business account
- Verified business
- Dedicated phone number (can't be your personal number)
Setup Steps
- Go to Meta Business Suite
- Create or select your business account
- Navigate to WhatsApp Manager
- Add a phone number and verify it
- Generate an API token
- Paste the token in your OpenClaw Cloud dashboard under Channels → WhatsApp Business
Configuration Options
Once connected, you can configure:
- Allowlist: Which phone numbers can message your AI
- Response Mode: Auto-reply or queue for approval
- Working Hours: Only respond during certain times
- Quick Replies: Pre-set responses for common questions
Troubleshooting
QR Code Won't Scan
Make sure your WhatsApp is updated to the latest version. The linked devices feature requires WhatsApp version 2.21.8 or later.
Messages Not Going Through
Check that your OpenClaw instance is running and that WhatsApp is properly linked in Settings → Linked Devices.
Session Disconnected
WhatsApp Web sessions can timeout. Re-scan the QR code in your dashboard to reconnect.
